Shawn Lonsdale, who became one of the most bedeviling local critics of the Church of Scientology, died of an apparent suicide at his Clearwater home this past weekend. He was 39.
There was no sign of foul play, said Clearwater police spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts.
Police found the body about 12:30 p.m. Saturday after neighbors complained of a pungent smell coming from the home Lonsdale rented at 510 N. Lincoln Ave. Authorities found a garden hose running from the exhaust pipe of Lonsdale's car to the home.

Will Smith may have studied Scientology with pal Tom Cruise, but he says his faith rests in his own spirituality.

As she shoots her latest movie, Mad Money, in Shreveport, La., Katie Holmes is making sure her fellow cast and crew members – all 200 or so of them – are well fed. For the third consecutive Friday she brought in a special treat.

Tom Cruise will be visiting New York for a gala on April 19 to benefit the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project, a controversial "detox" program for 9/11 workers.
Cruise, a Scientologist, helped open a clinic in downtown Manhattan after the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. The clinic offers free Scientology-inspired treatments to firefighters, cops and other rescue workers exposed to high levels of toxins at Ground Zero.
